Members from our Human Resources, Payroll, Marketing and Communications team were treated to a tour of Dawson Construction’s current paving job in Kamloops.
The tour began at the mobile Campbell Creek Pit, where Daniel Indelicato (Paving Plant Foreman) explained and showed how the asphalt is created by using the product provided by our crushing division, mixed with oil and heated up to create the finish product.
While the asphalt was getting made, Allie Matzner (Quality Control Technician) and Kyle Bergman (Quality Control Inspector) explained how they test the asphalt to make sure it is up to standards with the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. The Quality Control team explained how variance in composition can change with each mixture of aggregate and oil and the importance of managing the product in order to produce the best asphalt possible for the pavers to put down on the road.
Using both Dawson Construction and subcontracted trucks, the asphalt then made its way down to the jobsite, where our paving team began laying the asphalt down in place where the previous highway was removed with a subcontracted milling company.
Paving one lane at a time along the busy TransCanada Highway, the importance of being aware of the surroundings and working as safe as possible was very apparent. Even though our Dawson Construction team is working through the night to lessen the impact on traffic in Kamloops, our crews are operating within inches of vehicles driving by.
Over the duration of the project, our team will have laid down 20 lane kilometres of asphalt, totaling 33,000 tonnes.
Our corporate office team is always appreciative of our operational teams for allowing visits to the jobsite, as it gives us a better perspective of the incredible work our crews are doing in the field. We all look forward to seeing the finished product.
